Baptism does not make you a Christian, it is an outward declaration that you have given your life to Christ and want to follow Him. Baptism is important, Jesus himself was baptised.
The symbolism represents us as dying to our old life, being buried (going under the water) and as we come up out of the water it represents the resurrection. Us coming alive to walk in newness of life by His resurrection power.
Baptism is a public declaration of what Jesus Christ has done inside a person, the forgiveness of sin and new life and hope. It is making a public, visible statement to the world saying that “I am a follower of Jesus Christ”
